Biography

Trudy Bentley Rech studied painting and drawing at the American Academy of Art in Chicago.  At the American Academy, Trudy was awarded the prestigious William H. Mosby scholarship.  She studied under the guidance of Joseph VandenBroucke; a graduate of the Superior Institute in Antwerp, and Irving Shapiro, AWS.  She also studied fine art and art history at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan with Urban Institute for Contemporary Art cofounder, Ronald G. Watson, MFA.

Trudy was born in Chicago in 1947.  She began painting very early at age 3 under the watchful eye of her father, who also loved to paint and draw.  She consistently won awards for her art work during her childhood and teen years.  As a result of her achievements, she enrolled in the American Academy of Art even while still in high school.

Trudy’s art career faced a number of interruptions but gave her opportunity to do some medical and biological illustrations as a nurse and naturalist.  Her re-emergence as a full time fine artist began the summer of 2001.  Since then she has worked in a wide variety of media, recently concentrating in traditional oil painting.  Known for her colorful painterly figurative work, she equally enjoys exploring the natural environment and still life.  She has exhibited in Illinois, Michigan and in Florida.  Her work appears in private collections throughout the United States.  Trudy is represented by Bridges a Gallery of Fine Art in St. Charles, Illinois.

Artist’s Statement:

Finding a special moment in time or unique perspective is part of my drive.

My work is all about seizing time with pigment.

As an intensely visual person with a huge curiosity about the arts as well as the life sciences, I like to connect to the natural world in my work on multiple levels.

For example, when my subject is a person, it is my mission to look beyond the physical shell in order to find a connection with the personality of the subject.    I find great joy when that unique spark of the person is captured on canvas.   The natural environment challenges me to explore special ephemeral moments with my brush.  Ever changing skies are especially inspiring.

Painting becomes my dance inspired by vision: actualized by my own muscles and bones.
